Rajahmundry, officially known as Rajamahendravaram is District headquarters of East Godavari District. The city is known for its floriculture, history, culture, agriculture, economy, tourism, and its heritage. It is known as the "Cultural Capital of Andhra Pradesh". The city as a prominent settlement can be traced back to the rule of the Eastern Chalukya king Rajaraja Narendra (1022 AD). Rajahmundry was under Dutch rule for some time. Air: Rajahmundry airport is located at Madhurapudi 18 km away from the city centre. The tourists can easily reach this city by taking a flight from Mumbai by Jet airways and Spicejet. Daily four flights are operated by these two airliners.

Railways: Rajahmundry has one of the biggest railway stations in the whole state. One can take state bus, private bus or taxi to reach the railway station. The District Hospital, Rajamahendravaram under control of APVVP has been upgraded to a Teaching Hospital since 01.06.2022 with 500 sanctioned beds as per the AP State Government after transition from the erstwhile District Hospital Rajamahendravaram which was established in 1864 with 12 beds under the Municipality and was provincialised in 1928 and upgraded to 250 beds by 2022.
The hospital is located opposite to Central Prison and very nearer to National Highway in an area of 20.07 acres with all the facilities to cater the population in and around the Rajahmundry Town, situated near to national high way and providing treatment to the patients who are coming for their aliments from neighbouring districts like Amalapuram, Rampachodavaram & Peddapuram.

The Government of Andhra Pradesh has decided to establish a Government Medical College in every district. At present in the state of Andhra Pradesh, there are 11 Government Medical Colleges in 26 Districts.There is a need for the establishment of Medical Colleges in these other 15 districts and one among these 15 districts is East Godavari district.
As per G.O.Ms.No 27, Dt: 13.02.2019, The Government of Andhra Pradesh accorded sanction for establishing Government Medical College of Rajamahendravaram in the premises of District Hospital Rajamahendravaram.
